TM is not about “learning to live with stress.” It’s about eliminating stress from your mind and body.
As Mayo Clinic puts it, “Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your mind and body,” but you probably don’t need anyone telling you that stress can take a hefty toll on your health.
The stress hormone
In moments of stress, your body releases extra cortisol. When you’re chronically stressed, the high and prolonged levels of cortisol cause negative symptoms, “such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, anxiety disorder, and other illnesses.” (National Institutes of Health)
Less cortisol = less stress and anxiety
Research shows that during 20 minutes of TM practice, cortisol levels drop 30%. (During a good night’s sleep, cortisol levels drop an average of 2%.)
